FAQ
Here is a short FAQ that we hope will quickly answer some of you questions. If you have further questions, please call us at 1-250-590-6277 or email us at geomemes@gmail.com.
- Q. How many information systems has Geomemes built?
A. We have built three full blown systems (Metlakatla First Nation, Gitga'at First Nation, UVic Geography). These systems serve 100s of members and several silo'd departments. We have build dozens of lesser sites that have lesser functionality, many with maps (e.g. the Language Map Site at http://maps.fphlcc.ca).
- Q. What software platform are you using?
A. We use several free and open source software tools to create these community information systems. Two of the key tools are the Drupal content management system and the OpenLayers web-mapping Javascript library. The "glue" between these two software tools is a Drupal module called Drupal OpenLayers which our own Patrick Hayes coded 100s of hours on in 2009. We use open source code for all the right reasons: clean, well codumented code with very fast bug patches and very strong security.
- Q. What hardware is required?
A. We recommend that you use a modern small business server. These cost approximately $4,000-$7,500 when you include an off-site back-up server, racks and emergency power supplies.
- Q. How much does an CIS cost?
A. Anywhere from $10,000 to $50,000 depending on the complexity of the system your community needs. Contact us for more information and a quotation customized to your requirements.
A. Because we use free and open source software, there are no yearly licence fees. Maintenance of your server can be done by any competent systems professional. We offer very low rates on trouble-shooting and maintenance of the CIS software.
